Rise is a child development center and teaching laboratory located on the campus of the University of Alabama and serves mentally and physically disabled children up to 5 years of age in West Alabama. This facility contains six classrooms for 90 children.
Learning laboratory is where University students learn to assist young mentally and physically challenged infants and preschoolers. Courtyard gardens became essential to the organization of the building; classrooms and administrative areas open into the courtyards. This arrangement allowed the building to become “zoned” into areas more suitable for a child’s scale, and allowed us the freedom of design manipulation on the exterior of the building.
